Salo IoT Campus is expanding significantly to meet the growing demands for new production space

4.11.2020

Salo IoT Campus is launching an expansion project to respond to rapidly growing demands for production space. Salo IoT Campus has been a technological innovation hub in Salo since 2017 and it’s production facilities are currently operating at full capacity.

Salo IoT Campus is building a new, state-of-the-art production facility with a total of 4,000 m² of floor space. The total investment is approximately EUR 7.0 million without tenant investments and is financed with equity and loans. Construction will start at the end of autumn 2020.

The expansion will be done in response to the growth of the Salo battery plant.

The tenant of the expanded facility will be Valmet Automotive Salo battery plant. Valmet Automotive is growing significantly in the region as the company invests heavily in battery systems. The number of employees at the Salo battery plant is estimated to increase by hundreds in the next few years. As a result, Salo IoT Campus wants to participate in supporting this growth.

There is a real need for expansion, even though the campus has only been operating in the facilities for less than 4 years. Existing facilities have already been converted to another use due to a high demand, including the conversion of 5,000 m² of office space into production facilities. Some of the campus facilities are now also used by the university of applied sciences and the university of applied sciences cyber laboratory.

“The new expansion project has already been fully leased. At the same time, projects to expand and convert other facilities are also being considered to meet a future growing demand, says Jukka Vakula, the CEO of the Salo IoT Campus. Currently, the campus is home to about 100 companies and roughly 2,000 employees, students and researchers.

This expansion is a major construction project in the region, where the construction of new facilities has been rather limited since Nokia ceased operations in Salo.
