Vinski Mäyrälä has had the chance to witness the development of Salo IoT Campus from the get-go. He participated as a student representative in the ideation session laying the groundwork to campus services. Now, he gets to see his ideas come to life: Mäyrälä studies in Turku University of Applied Sciences’ BusinessAcademy, which moved to Salo IoT Campus alongside all the other disciplines of the university’s Salo unit in early 2018.
The BusinessAcademy teaches students business economics in way that emphasizes entrepreneurship, independence and versatility. During the first year of studies, students are taught some basic business courses, after which they are split into teams. Each team sets up a co-op and starts executing business ideas of its choosing from the second year on. For instance, the 24-year-old Mäyrälä has participated in organizing a business event, setting up an import company and carrying out diverse marketing assignments. The student says his co-op could easily take on even more projects.
“I do dream of starting my own business in the future – or maybe even two. I am just extremely tempted by the opportunity to make my own decisions. Already, in our ten-person co-op our own interests dictate everything that we do. When you are interested in doing something, you do it without counting the hours.”
Mäyrälä thinks Salo has a distinctly entrepreneurial spirit. On Salo IoT Campus, he has been impressed by the ease with which interaction between companies generates new ideas and collaborations. In his new study environment, Mäyrälä appreciates the forward-thinking vibe and excellent setting for collaborations.
“Here, you get to be a part of things. That is what is so great about Salo IoT Campus.”
